Project Single Parent
PPB embarked on a CSR project known as "Project Single Parent" whereby PPB will provide in-kind assistance to eligible single parents to enable them to earn a living. Together with the Grace Community Services (GCS), single parents who are recipients to GCS's food bank are selected for this Project.
PPB's first recipient to this Project is Madam Chia Siew Ngoh aged 38. Madam Chia is a hardworking single mum with a 15-year old daughter living with her and an 11-year old son under the care of Rumah KIDS. Her husband, left the family when the children were very young. Madam Chia is illiterate and previously worked in a pig farm. She and her daughter are assisted by Madam Chia's sister who has 3 school-going children of her own. They live in a rented shophouse in Tanjung Sepat.
Madam Chia operates a small hawker stall with the help of her sister who is a good cook. She mends the stall while her sister cooks the food. Presently, the business brings just enough income for their daily expenses with no extra cash for medical or savings.
PPB gave a one-time contribution in-kind contribution comprising a 3-burner stove, a 10-litre rice cooker, buffet trays with warmers and some FFM products to Madam Chia to make her stall operations more efficient, and enable her to serve warm food. Sales has increased by 10-20% with the contribution from PPB. Madam Chia also makes tasty yellow glutinous rice dumplings and PPB staff gave her a big order to jumpstart her business.
Madam Chia said "The extra income has helped ease the monthly cashflow a little to cover rental, utilities and other necessary expenses for the family. Thank you, PPB, for your contribution and kindness".
